Out Olympians You Should Know: Nico Young

Paris 2024. Team USA. 10,000 meters.

Nico Young arrived at the Olympic Games already carrying a piece of history with him as an openly gay American distance runner.

That matters because representation in sport is not only about who gets celebrated after the finish line.

It is also about who gets to stand on the start line and be fully known.

That is worth remembering.

Meet Dr. Jay Kumar, one of the leaders helping shape what Pride House LA/WeHo becomes on the road to 2028.

A behavioral scientist, board executive and nationally recognized leadership strategist, Jay brings deep experience across nonprofit, academic, corporate and public-sector leadership. He currently serves as President of the Northwestern University Club of Chicago and on the board of the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, with a track record spanning governance, strategic communications, fundraising and stakeholder engagement.

For Pride House LA/WeHo and Out Athlete Fund, that experience helps us think bigger about the kind of community we are building: welcoming, connected and ready for a global stage.

We’re proud to have @docjaykumar on the board.

199.

that's how many publicly out LGBTQ athletes competed at the last Summer Games.

186 the time before that.

the number keeps climbing. more athletes competing openly, visibly, and fully as themselves. 🏳️‍🌈

LA 2028 is ours.

let's make 199 look small.

Our athletes should never have to wonder whether their community is standing behind them.

We are here. We see them. We believe in them. And we intend to show up loudly.

As Michael Ferrera, CEO of Out Athlete Fund - Pride House LA/WeHo, told Los Angeles Blade:

“We are here. Our athletes are here. We’ve got their backs. You should, too.”
